What is DELTA?

DELTA, the Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, is Cambridge English’s advanced qualification for experienced English language teachers. It is internationally recognised and designed for teachers who want to deepen their professional knowledge, classroom expertise and reflective teaching practice.

CELTA helps teachers enter the profession. DELTA helps experienced teachers progress further into senior teaching, teacher training, academic management, materials writing or curriculum development roles.

Who is DELTA for?

DELTA is designed for practising English language teachers who already have classroom experience and want to take the next step in their professional development.

It is especially suitable for teachers aiming to move into senior teaching roles, academic management, teacher training, mentoring, materials writing or curriculum development.

DELTA is not an entry-level qualification. It is best suited to teachers who are ready for advanced study, reflective practice and a deeper understanding of English language teaching.

How DELTA Is Structured

DELTA consists of three independent modules. You can take the modules separately, combine them over time, and build your qualification around your experience, schedule and career goals.

Module One

Theory-based module covering language systems, skills, methodology, assessment and written exam preparation.

Best for: Theory & Exam Focus

Module Two

Practice-based module focused on assessed teaching, lesson planning, tutor feedback and reflective development.

Best for: Teaching Practice

Module Three

Specialist written assignment focused on course design, needs analysis, assessment, evaluation or ELT management.

Best for: Specialism & Management

DELTA MODULE

Module One

Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources

Module One is the theory-based part of DELTA. It focuses on language systems, teaching methodology, assessment and professional knowledge, and is assessed through a written Cambridge examination.

What does Module One focus on?

Module One develops your ability to analyse language, understand how English is learned and taught, and apply professional terminology to real teaching contexts.

How is Module One assessed?

Assessment is through a written Cambridge examination. Candidates are expected to analyse language, evaluate teaching materials and show a strong understanding of ELT theory and classroom decision-making.

Module One at a Glance

A theory-focused DELTA module designed to strengthen your language awareness, methodology knowledge and exam-based professional understanding.

Good starting point for teachers who want to build confidence with DELTA terminology, theory and exam-based knowledge before moving on to practice-focused modules.

DELTA MODULE

Module Two

Developing Professional Practice

Module Two is the practice-based part of DELTA. It focuses on advanced classroom teaching, lesson planning, assessed teaching practice and reflective professional development through a Cambridge-moderated teaching portfolio.

What does Module Two focus on?

Module Two develops your ability to plan, teach, evaluate and improve lessons with real learners. It connects classroom practice with ELT theory and helps you make more informed teaching decisions.

How is Module Two assessed?

Assessment is based on a teaching portfolio that includes observed lessons, written background assignments, lesson plans and reflective evaluation. The portfolio is externally moderated by Cambridge.

Module Two at a Glance

A practice-focused DELTA module designed to develop advanced classroom teaching skills through assessed lessons, tutor feedback and reflective professional development.

Best suited to teachers who are ready for intensive teaching practice, detailed lesson planning and reflective development with tutor support.

DELTA MODULE

Module Three

Extending Practice and Specialism

Module Three is the specialist written assignment part of DELTA. It focuses on applying ELT theory and professional judgement to a specific teaching, learning or management context.

What does Module Three focus on?

Module Three develops your ability to specialise in a chosen ELT area and design a principled, context-specific proposal. Candidates analyse learner needs, teaching contexts, assessment requirements and course design decisions.

How is Module Three assessed?

Assessment is through an extended written assignment submitted to Cambridge. Candidates are expected to show clear analysis, principled decision-making and the ability to connect theory with practical course design or management planning.

Module Three at a Glance

A specialist DELTA module built around an extended written assignment, allowing teachers to focus on course design, assessment, curriculum development or ELT management.

Best suited to teachers who want to specialise in a professional area, develop course design expertise or move toward academic management.

Module Three ELTM: Management Option

The ELTM route is designed for teachers and academic managers who want to focus on English language teaching management. It explores leadership, organisation, teacher development, quality assurance and change management in language teaching contexts.
